Holy Communion Episcopal Church, Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, dates back to the 1840's when the Missionary Bishop, Jackson Kemper, first visited the area.
A Brief History of Holy Communion Episcopal Church, Lake Geneva, Wisconsin The story of the Episcopal Church for Lake Geneva dates back to 1844 when Bishop Jackson Kemper of Wisconsin agreed to the forming of a congregation in Bloomfield Township, Walworth County. The parish was formed with the name “Church of the Holy Communion.” However, within about ten years, the congregation settled on Lake Geneva as the permanent location for the church and in 1857 a lot was purchased on the northwest corner of Broad and Geneva Streets. Construction of a new edifice designed by the architectural firm, Treat and Volts of Chicago, began several years later and on June 7, 1882, the Bishop of Milwaukee, Edward R. Welles, consecrated the new Church of the Holy Communion. Shortly after the new building was consecrated, the parish acquired the current handsome Hook and Hastings Tracker Pipe Organ in 1883. Overhauled in 1939 and in 1960, the organ continues to bless the worship with it’s mellow and majestic sound. Music has been a vital part of the history of the congregation from the earliest times with a variety of concerts and choral presentations over the years. A rector who had a great influence on the growth of the parish was the Rev. David Arnold Schaefer, who served from 1919 to 1937. He was born in Ohio and attended Wittenberg College receiving an A.B. degree in 1895. Lake Geneva had become a retreat area for many of the fine families of Chicago and he having served two parishes in that great city provided an additional attraction for city folk to visit and recreate in the Lake area. The parish still alternates as a church home for many who live in or near the city and summer in Lake Geneva. During World War II, parishioners offered the Lake Geneva Chapter of the American Red Cross the use of their Guild Hall which they occupied from 1942-1946. During this time, the congregation began an Honor Roll for members of the parish who had served in this war. On December 24, 1944, PFC Douglas Francis Brady, a member of the parish, died in service to his country. The post-war years saw tremendous growth in the congregation and in 1950 the church annual records 200 members for the previous year. During these years, there were many repairs and improvements made to the property and the various buildings related to the church. However, the parish, for many reasons, fell on some hard times—both with clergy and with laity. In June 1974, Vestry minutes note, “we signed a contract with a new organist but the organist has left town and his whereabouts are unknown.” The Guild Hall became the home for the town square dance group, know as the “Limber Timers.” In 2003, the Vestry of Holy Communion called the Rev. James Andrew Kaestner to be the Interim after the Rev. Robert Boak Slocum left the parish. Kaestner was born in Milwaukee, educated at Carroll University and Nashotah House Theological Seminary. He served as “Interim” for eight years and brought many innovations to the parish. His administrator, Carol Coccia, up-dated the parish records which had fallen into neglect over the years. Jim and his wife, Judith, are currently living in retirement in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, but memories of his service and care for he congregation have become legendary. March 7, 2007, Fr. Kaestner and the congregation secured the services of Eleanor Coolidge to serve as Music Director and Organist and Fletcher Coolidge, her husband, to serve as Choir Director. Both brought years of musical training and service to the congregation and continue to offer an excellent choral support to the worship of the parish. At present, the Rev. William P. McLemore, a retired priest residing in McHenry, Illinois, where his wife, the Rev. Lori M. Lowe is rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church; serves the congregations on Sundays and Wednesdays as a regular supply priest. Bill has lived all over the country and world as the son of an Army officer and a priesthood beginning in Florida and later including, Georgia, Alabama, Maryland, Illinois, and now Wisconsin. He says of his ministry at Holy Communion, “I have the best of all possible worlds as a priest and pastor—the laity run the church and I get to be their sacramental minister, preacher, and pastor.”
